Chino Planes of Fame Air Show May 20-22 2005

On May 20-22 2005, Squadron 45 participated in the yearly sensational Planes of Fame Air Show in Chino. Under the leadership, of Capt. Binder of Chino’s Squadron 20, 5 of Squadron 45’s cadets found themselves Friday afternoon bivouacking on the grounds of the Chino Airport.

Members from 14 of the following Squadrons were present and involved-- Squadron 20 (Chino), 45 (March ARB), 11 (Palm Springs), 15 (Lancaster), 25 (Upland), 29 (Corona), 107 (Torrance) 49 (Pancho Barnes), 59 (Hemet) 3 (Van Nuys) 64 (La Verne) 1986 (Simi Valley), 120 (Victorville), 51 (Santa Monica).

Both senior members and cadets played important roles in making this event a success. The cadet’s duties included a 24 hour watch over the planes. The cadets were divided up into 5 flights and took turns doing a night shift, guarding both civilian and military planes. During the air show on Saturday and Sunday, the cadets guarded the flight line and monitored crowd control.

The most demanding portion of each cadet’s duty was to withstand the high temperatures, which ranged between 93-96 degrees. SM Bushem drove the ‘water wagon’, diligently monitoring the cadets to make sure each of them was thoroughly hydrated with A LOT of water.

Naturally, each cadet took his/her duties seriously but admitted they found it especially exciting when they were duty free and could focus on watching the Planes of Fame do their acrobatics.

We are proud of our 5 cadets who served and represented our Squadron with distinction.

·         C/CMSgt. Bushem said, ‘My favorite part about the airshow was being able to work with the cadets and help them accomplish their jobs. I was very strict with the customs and courtesies, and I am proud to say that my flight made the CAP look sharp; Alpha flight cadets were willing to work, and learn about all the aircraft displayed at Chino...and I was glad to have helped them help themselves!’

·         Cadet Boyko said the most exciting part of the experience was ‘guarding the A-10’s and F-16 for a night shift.’

·         The same seemed true for Cadet Goude, ‘I enjoyed night patrol and guarding the A-10

·         Cadet Odenbaugh said he ‘liked being with other cadets, playing dodge ball and wished for more jet planes so he could watch more people cover their ears’.

·         Cadet Applegate said, ‘I liked the atmosphere. I liked the structure, seeing how the cadets worked as a team’.
