2005 Group 3 Dining-Out
On 9 July 2005 the Inland Empire Group 3 gathered at the Rialto Country Club to enjoy a dining out and to recognize the valuable members within the Group. Under the direction of the ‘President of the Mess’, Lt. Col. Bob Pearce, and ‘Mister Vice’, Major Simon Housman, and a head table of dignitaries including Group Commander Colonel Orchard and Squadron 45’s very own Lt.Col. and Capt. Nahrstadt, members of the group enjoyed an evening filled with good food and good company. The group was also fortunate to have Colonel Nancy Driscoll of the USAFR conduct a presentation on the history of what is now March Air Reserve Base past and present.
Squadron 45 was recognized numerous times throughout the evening for the various deeds and achievements of members in the squadron. Cadets and Senior Members alike from Squadron 45 were recognized for accomplishments as follows:
Lt.Col. Nahrstadt received the Chaplain of the Year award, and also received honors along with his wife Capt. Nahrstadt for their completion of Level 4 in the Senior Member Program.
Captain Neubaurer was given honors for completing Level 3 of the Senior Member Program.
Both Senior Member Boyko’s were presented with their new grades, Captain and Lieutenant in front of the group and also spent their 15th wedding anniversary with the group! (Congratulations to you both!)
Senior Member Bushem, although not present, was promoted to Lieutenant.
C/2d Lt. Bushem along with C/Capt. Hotchkiss from Squadron 120 were recognized by Colonel Orchard for their outstanding work in the Cadet Advisory Council. C/2d Lt. Bushem was also recognized for her promotion to the grade of Cadet 2nd Lieutenant and for the VFW award, and was presented with the Group 3 NCO of the Year award.
As for our Squadron Commander, Major Black has earned the Paul Garber Level IV award and is awaiting her pending promotion to Lt.Col!
Squadron 45 is a very valuable unit to Group 3 and we’re proud to have such excellent leadership within our squadron!

Representatives from all Squadrons in the Inland Empire Group 3, were in attendance as we celebrated the achievements and awards of our members at the 2005 Dining-Out.
The El Rancho Verde Royal Vista Golf Course Club House was the site of this year’s Banquet, Saturday night, July 9.
Presided over by our Group Commander Lt. Col. Helen Orchard and directed by Lt. Col. Bob Pearce, President of the mess, the members ate, drank, socialized and listened intently as Col. Nancy Driscoll, USAFR presented, with pictures, the fascinating history of March Field with its inception to its exciting future as home to the new C-17 fleet.
The highlight, however, was Mr. Vice and the non-alcoholic ‘Grog Bowl’. Failure to follow the rules of the mess meant a trip to the ‘Grog Bowl’ and many attendees including Capt. Boyko, Major Black and Cadet/2nd Lt. Cami Bushem from Squadron 45 made the march up to the bowl. Once up to the bowl, they served up a cup, drank the contents from the bowl completely and then tipped the cup upside down on top of their heads to prove all had been consumed.
Squadron 45 took pride as Lt. Col Jack Nahrstadt received Group 3’s Chaplain of the year award. Both Lt. Col Jack Nahrstadt and Capt. Karen Nahrstadt received the Chuck Yeager Award. Capt. Kathy Newbauer received her Level III certificate and one of our cadets, 2nd Lt. Cami Bushem received the Cadet NCO of the Year Award. Both Capt. Mike Boyko and 1st Lt. Diane Eller-Boyko were presented with their epaulets and promotions.
The banquet ended with the drawing of names for door prizes and most everyone left with some treasure and a smile.
