F-16 Refueling Over Arizona

by

LtCol Jessica Black, Commander, CAP Squadron 45

On the 19th of August, 2005 16 cadets from CAP squadrons 31, 45, 49, and 84 along with 5 Senior Members were treated to a three-hour ride with the 163rd Air National Guard’s on a KC135 airplane.  The flight started at the Guard unit at March ARB and took us out over northern Arizona where we rendezvoused with four F-16 fighter jets (complete with armament).  All CAP members were able to observe the jets both alongside the wingtips and from the boom bay as each aircraft was refueled.  With several waves and thumbs-up signs, the F-16 pilots acknowledged the cadets doing the same from the KC135.  All the cadets were given a tour of the cockpit while a few lucky cadets were actually given seats in the cockpit during the flight out and back.  The rest of the cadets experienced the ride military-style from the jump seats while the less-agile seniors enjoyed the ride from the airline style seating provided for older bones.  All in all, it was a very educational experience for each of us.  Thank you 163rd Air National Guard!
